Join us Tuesday April 21, 2026 from 7:30-9:00pm for John Boyko’s presentation 14th Colony to 51st State: America Coveting Canada following the Peterborough Historical Society Annual General Meeting at 7pm at the Lions Center in Peterborough.
The United States has suffered not one but four Civil Wars and in each it has actively sought to make Canada American through buying, bombing, or bamboozling us. Author and historian John Boyko will explore the many machinations of American leaders wanting Canada from Benjamin Franklin to Donald Trump
John has written nine books addressing Canadian history and politics including In Pursuit of Tomorrow: The Inventive Life of Sandford Fleming thatwill be published in June 2026. Among his other books are Bennett: The Rebel Who Challenged and Changed a Nation, Blood and Daring: How Canada Fought the American Civil War and Forged a Nation, and The Devil’s Trick: How Canada Fought the Vietnam War.
John was born in Hamilton, raised in Peterborough, and has degrees from Trent, Queen’s, and McMaster Universities. He is a retired educator and administrator, has served on and chaired many boards, and is currently Selwyn Township’s Lakefield Ward councillor. John lives in Lakefield.
